Giving goods to your community just got easier!
Just in time for the holiday season, I’m pleased to announce the launch of non-profit project GeoDonation, a convenient web-based map that indexes 1,000 donation bins and other drop-off points in Montreal from many charitable organizations.
The map currently offers filters for clothes, furniture, books, sporting goods and electronics. The site works both on the web and in responsive mobile to make it easier to give on the go.
Before GeoDonation, givers needed to consult various websites to compare locations. Now, they can get in one place a bird’s eye view of the organizations accepting donations of goods.
Some of the organizations represented include Société St-Vincent de Paul, Société des Grands Frères et Grandes Soeurs de Montréal, Fédération Québécoise de la Déficience Intellectuelle, Entraide Diabétique du Québec, Salvation Army, Renaissance Québec and others.
I created GeoDonation with my friend and Busbud teammate Naoufal Kadhom as a way to give back to the Montreal community during this holiday season.
I had a pile of old clothes near the edge of the door for several months, but I was never sure where exactly I could donate it. After chatting with Naoufal and some friends, we figured that this “pile of things to give” actually existed in many Montreal apartments. Both Naoufal and I wanted a one-stop easy-to-use list of donation bin locations near where we lived — and the types of items they accepted. GeoDonation was created to make sure Montrealers would always know where to give!
What next? There are still a few improvements we’re looking to make in the next few days, especially on the mobile side. We’ll be adding a French version and a few more features too. We’re also planning a native mobile application for iPhone and Android for early 2014.
So this holiday season, don’t throw it away! Use GeoDonation to learn where you can give back to your community!
